These gentle falls are located at just a five-minute walk from The Sandankyo Front Gate. Shimaidaki’s beautiful streams run perpendicular to the rock face, with the number of interweaving streams varying based on the amount of water.
This waterfall’s rock face is a vibrant, saturated brick-red. The color was naturally cultivated by the microorganisms in the surrounding environment. Since these falls are located right along the path, you can view them from close up.
At 100m long, surrounded by towering rock cliffs, Kurobuchi Pool is a sight to behold by boat. The name Kurobuchi (translating to black rim/edge) is said to originate from the fact that the river is so deep, its surface appears black.
This tea house is in a place only accessible via the Kurobuchi Ferryboat. Take in a grand view of Sandankyo while enjoying local charcoal-grilled fish and soumen (cool ramen).
A glorious 130m-long, three-level waterfall. The sound of the water gushing from this waterfall can be heard throughout the gorge. This view of this waterfall, surrounded by imposing trees, is an absolute must-see.
Standing at more than 20m tall, the rock walls at Sarutobi Rock tower over a narrow space of 2~3m in width. Get a close hand look at this magnificent sight with an intimate Ferryboat ride through the narrow passageway.
After taking the Sarutobi Ferryboat, you will arrive at this mysterious, two-level waterfall. One level of the fall was eroded away by a torrential rainstorm in 1988.
Also known as ‘Tatamiiwa’, this waterfall has three turns and five levels. The large scale of Mitudaki Falls speaks to the rich history of Sandankyo. This beautiful scene is easily accessible from the Hijiri Lake entrance.
A small, 5m-wide gate enclosed by tall cliffs on both sides. The contrast of the smooth, bare rock face and the flowing river make for an outstanding scene.
